Kestrel – Falco tinnunculus – Hunting Sequence
at Abberton Reserve

A kestrel hovers above the meadow and fields, scanning the ground for small mammals and insects in the open landscapes of Abberton Reservoir.

The kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is one of the UK’s most widespread birds of prey, recognised for its ability to hover almost motionless in the air while hunting. This 12-shot sequence follows the kestrel’s behaviour from its perch on an owl box, through moments of hovering, gliding, and diving, to its final landing on the ground after a hunting attempt without prey.

Known for its sharp eyesight, the kestrel can spot small movements from high above and adjust its flight with incredible precision. While not every dive results in success, these images capture the energy and elegance of the kestrel’s hunting strategy, offering a glimpse into the daily life of this striking falcon.
