Grey Heron in Flight Sequence I — (Ardea cinerea) at Brandon Marshes

A dynamic sequence showing the Grey Heron’s powerful take-off and flight across the wetlands.

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a familiar sight across UK wetlands, instantly recognisable with its long neck, dagger-like bill, and broad grey wings. Patient and still while hunting, it transforms into a powerful flyer when disturbed or moving between feeding grounds.

This first sequence follows the heron from the moment it leaves the water’s edge to its strong departure over the reserve. Each frame captures a distinct stage of movement — the push from the shallows, the first strong wingbeats, and the smooth glide as it crosses open water. The photographs reveal both the bird’s strength and its elegance in motion.
